Ice Skating and Hockey

Shinney

The community of Field floods and maintains one of Canada’s most picturesque outdoor natural skating and hockey rinks. Whether chasing a puck or just out for the exercise, you will be nestled by a mountain rink surrounded by the Kicking Horse Valley, Mount Dennis, Mount Stephen and the Van Horne Range. Change rooms and lights for night skating are available for the public to take advantage of.

Located behind the Field Community Hall family skating is only moments away from the Kicking Horse Lodge.

Hockey enthusiasts will enjoy the almost nightly local game on the rink. Show up with a puck, stick and an outgoing attitude and the kids of Field will treat you to a old fashioned game of shinney.

Dog Sledding

While visiting Field you may be interested in booking a dog sledding tour. This classic method of snowbound travel puts you in tow behind a team of Alaskan Huskies, at the direction of a trained guide. You can book a dog sled tour in the Rocky Mountains through Kingmik Dog Sled Tours, located near Lake Louise, a quick 20-minute drive from Field in neighboring Banff National Park.

Kingmik Dog Sled Tours

In operation since 1982, Kingmik offers 30-minute introductory sled rides near Lake Louise, or 90-minute trips that take you to the Continental Divide and back. The dog sleds are foam padded, have sleeping bags to help with the winter chill and seat two average sized adults and a small child. If you are keen to do so, your guide will give you the instruction and opportunity to personally drive the dog team home. Otherwise, sit back and enjoy the beautiful scenery on this traditional Canadian passage through the wintry mountain landscape of the Rockies.
